La atmósfera en casa era horrible, por eso Adrian se iba a casa de Bert. En el instituto las cosas tampoco iban bien: sentía que Pandora era más inteligente que él y que su relación no iba bien. También escribió un poema en el baño y el director le expulsó una semana del instituto.

22 * January 25th – February 8th
Adrian se alegro de que los fontaneros estuvieran en huelga, así no podría ducharse en el instituto. Tenía mucha vergüenza de que sus compañeros le vieran sin ropa.
Horrible Lucas fue su casa para reclamar a Rosie. La señora Mole decía que la niña era de George Mole, pero Lucas decía que en marzo del año pasado él y Pauline estuvieron juntos. Adrian se dio cuenta de que hacía un año, sus padres mantuvieron relaciones con otras personas y de ahí salieron dos hijos (Brett y Rosie). Lucas dijo que les demandarían si no le dejaban ver a la niña. Adrian lo estaba pasando muy mal. No podía concentrarse para estudiar y lloraba. Pandora estaba a su lado; era una buena amiga.
El periodo de prueba terminó, pero el señor y la señora Mole quisieron extenderlo. Hablaban incluso de comprarse otra casa.

Horrible Lucas came to their house demanding to see Rosie. Mrs Mole said that George Mole was the father but Lucas said that Pauline and him were together one night the last year. Adrian discovered that his parents had affairs the last year and it made that he had two new brothers: Brett and Rosie. Lucas said that he would take them to court if they didn’t allow to see Rosie. Adrian was very sad, he couldn’t concentrate and he cried sometimes. Pandora was with him; she was a good friend.
The trial period finished but Mr and Mrs Mole wanted to extend it. They talked about to boy anew house.

El señor y la señora Mole iban a tener un periodo de prueba; iban a intentar convivir durante un mes siguiendo unas reglas. Si la cosa no funcionaba, se divorciarían. Las nuevas normas eran:
- George Mole tenía que hacer las tareas domésticas
- Pauline Mole debía ser más ordenada
- Los sábados comerían fuera
- Los niños tenían que ser atendidos por igual por los dos padres
- Hablarían sobre la economía familiar los viernes por la tarde

Los nuevos propósitos de Adrian para el próximo año eran: estudiar más para sus exámenes, no pensar en sexo en horario escolar, hacerse amigo del perro de Bert e intentar que sus padres se reconciliaran.
Bert se quedó en casa de los Mole para celebrar el Año Nuevo. Pero la señora Mole no quería tener al señor Baxter todos los días en su casa: bastante tenía con el bebé. El señor Mole llamó para felicitarles el año, y Pauline le invitó a tomar algo.
Desde ese día, el señor y la señora Mole negociaban si volver a estar juntos o no. A veces se enfadaban y Adrian tenía que hacer de intermediario.

Adrian sacó dinero de su cuenta bancaria para comprar los regalos de navidad. Recordó que tenía que hacerle un regalo a su hermana Rosie y que Queenie ya no estaban. Fue a la tienda más barata de Gran Bretaña
Por la noche fue a una la fiesta del Club de Jóvenes. Adrian bailó con Pandora y vio a Nigel bailando descaradamente con Clive Barnes. Todos decían que Nigel era gay, y si era así, entonces Adrian no quería ser ya su mejor amigo.
El día de Navidad, la señora Mole estaba tan ocupada con Rosie, que fue Adrian quien hizo las compras: compró pavo, verduras y luces para el árbol. Cuando regresó, su madre y él decoraron el salón. Sus invitados fueron Bert, la tía Susan y su amiga Gloria. Gloria era una chica muy guapa y sexy. Adrian no entendía cómo su tía Sustan (que trabajaba en la carcel, fumaba y tenía los dedos peludos) podía tener una amiga así.
Al día siguiente, se dieron los regalos. La señora Mole le regaló un abrigo de piel (no era lo que él esperaba, pero le gustó). Después Adrian quedó con Pandora para darse los regalos también. Ella le regaló una bufanda; él una cadena para el cuello. A Pandora le gustó mucho su regalo, pero al día siguiente le salió un sarpullido en el cuello.

Queenie murió una noche mientras dormía. Todos estaban muy tristes pero había que preparar todo lo necesario para el funeral. Bert no tenía suficiente dinero para un funeral bonito, de manera que Adrian llamó a todos los amigos del matrimonio Baxter para pedir donativos. Queenie fue incinerada. Después del funeral se fueron a casa de Pandora.
